'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. Tired of losing your charger? Apple accessory company Twelve South might just have an answer.

In what it's calling a world-first, the company debuted its PlugBug today -- a USB-C wall charger with Find My built-in.

If your PlugBug goes missing, you'll be able to use the Find My app on your iPhone or Macbook to track its location or to make it beep. Of course there's the added benefit of being able to track your suitcase or bag if you leave your charger in it.

Two options are available: a 50W charger that powers up 2 devices at once for $69.99 or a 120W charger that can power up to four devices simultaneously for $119.99. PlusBug is compatible with all iPhones 6 and later, the iPad Pro 12.9-inch generation 1 to 5, most iPad Pros, most iPad Airs and Macbook Airs, the iPad mini generation 1 to 6, most Apple Watch versions, and the Apple Vision Pro

For international travelers, Apple will sell an exclusive version for $10 more that comes with six international adapters and a carrying case.

The PlugBug has a slim frame that lets it fit where many other chargers can't, Twelve South says, and the prongs fold in if you're taking it on the go.

Twelve South explained that due to specific electrical regulations, the power for the Find My part of the charger is separate from the device's AC. This means Find My tracking will work even if it's not plugged in. The company also said that it uses the same replaceable button battery as the Apple AirTag, meaning it should last about a year before it needs replacing. The Find My app will allow you to track your battery status.

While the device has different ports, it doesn't matter which one you use. Thanks to dynamic power delivery, PlugBug automatically sends the right amount of wattage.

The devices are available for order now and will ship the week of Sept. 16.
